How To Weather Proof A Storage Locker

by Stephen Patterson

Protecting the contents of your storage unit is important to ensure that they retain their original value and their original form. For storage lockers that are located in cold climates it is important to weather proof the inside of your unit to protect them for the upcoming winter months. There are a number of things that you can do to weather proof the inside of your unit without breaking the bank. Here is a step by step guide on how to prepare your storage locker for winter.

Insulate The Door

You can insulate the inside of a storage locker door by installing foil foam board to the inside of the door. To complete this task you will need enough foam board to cover the door, a utility knife to cut it, duct tape, and a measuring tape. Start by measuring the length and width of the door and then cut the foam board using the utility knife to fit the size of the door. Fit each foam board into the storage locker door with the foil side facing the door and duct tape it into place securely. The foil will help to prevent the extreme cold from coming through the door and keep the temperature inside the locker a few degrees warmer than the temperature outside.

Install A Flood Stop

When the weather gets warmer the snow will melt and the weather will start to witch to rain. To prevent water from being able to pool on the outside along the storage locker door, install a flood stop that will stop water from being able to come into the unit. Buy a flood stop from your local home department store and then align the stop along the door of the unit. Check to make sure that the door can still close properly and form a seal with the flood stop in place. When the flood stop is in the proper position, remove the adhesive strip on the back of flood stop and then attach it to the floor. Make sure that the flood stop has a chance to adhere to the floor and will not move before you begin using it.

Following these steps outlined above will help you weather proof the inside of your storage locker and get it ready for winter. If you have questions about what you can or cannot do inside a storage locker you should consult with the local storage vendor like Lake County Storage of Round Lake Heights in your area to go over the company's policy.
