4 Tips For Making An Out-Of-State Move Easier On Young Kids

by Stephen Patterson

While moving to a new state can be stressful for adults, it can be overwhelming for young children. Leaving behind a city, school, and friends to move to a place that they may have never even visited can be a lot for kids to understand and process. If you are planning an out-of-state move, use the following tips to help your children through the process:

Help Your Child Learn More About the New State You Will be Living In

When you're moving out of state, it is a good idea to inform your kids as far in advance as possible so they can get used to the idea. Spend time looking at pictures with your children so they can get an idea of what their new city will look like. If you will be visiting the state prior to the move to look for housing, consider bringing your children with you so they can familiarize themselves with the area that will be their new home. When talking about the move with your kids, have a positive attitude but make your kids feel comfortable expressing any fears or uncomfortable emotions they have about moving away.

Pack Your Children's Belongings Last

Packing up a house can be a very long and tedious process, so you should start as soon a you know that you will be moving out of state. Young kids can get upset seeing all of their belongings, especially favorite toys, being packed up into boxes, so consider packing their rooms last. Let your kids help you pack up their things and be part of the process in order to give them a sense of control over the situation. It is a good idea to set aside a small box or backpack for your kids to fill with their most prized possessions so they have them with them when you're driving or flying to your new state.

Throw a Good-Bye Party

A good-bye party in your home is a great way for your kids to create special memories with friends and family members before the big move. Make it a fun, festive event that can help your children look forward to the move and the new adventures that are in the future.

Keep Your Kids Busy When You Arrive in Your New State

When you arrive at your new home in your new state, keep your kids busy by exploring your new area and finding fun stuff to do. If you move during the summer months when school is not in session, try to focus on local activities where there will be a lot of other kids present so your children will have the opportunity to make new friends. Don't be afraid to introduce your family to your new neighbors-- making new friends with kids that live on the same street can make the adjustment to moving much easier for children to handle.

A Place for Your Summer Things

Fall is my absolute favorite season of the year. The crisp, cool air outside during fall is refreshing. I also adore the beautiful, colorful leaves on the trees in the fall months. However, as fall arrives, I always have a predicament. I need to find a place to store all of my family’s summer related belongings. Do you struggle to find places in your home to store summer items such as bathing suits, shorts, sandals, and swimming pool accessories during the fall and winter months?
